Summit County Beekeepers Association is offering a beginner beekeeping course starting in February of 2024.
Honey bees have earned our gratitude and respect. From their selfless dedication to the survival of their colonies to their honey-hoarding and pollinating activities, bees have benefited mankind for millions of years. Come and learn how we can return the favor!
Our three classroom lectures will cover the following topics:
– Bee biology
– Races of honey bees
– Beehives and needed equipment
– Beehive placement and regulations
– Fundamentals of hive management
– Maintaining a strong and healthy colony
– Pests and diseases – Management and mitigation
– Beneficial plants and trees
– Life as a first-year beekeeper
– Beekeeping pitfalls to avoid
– Integrated Pest management
– Varroa Mite Destructor and its effect on the colony
– Diseases and Remedies
– Plants and trees that pollinators love and use
– Q&A and prizes
The in-person workshops, one of which will be hive-side, will cover the following topics:
– Beehive Equipment
– Installing your bees
– Lighting your smoker and keeping it lit
– Conducting your first inspection
– Finding the queen
– Hiveside Q&A
What is included:
– Three classroom lectures via ZOOM and two Hands-on workshops
– Reference book “Backyard Beekeeping” by Kim Flottum
– One-year membership to Summit County Beekeepers Association
